How to Choose Web Hosting
An Analogy to Better Understand Web Hosting Services
How to Choose the Ideal Web Hosting Plan for Your Needs?

This blog post will be very brief, as it’s solely meant to better explain web hosting, which is the virtual space where your website or application will be stored. To help you avoid any confusion, I’ve written this blog to explain the technical side of things with a simple and easy-to-understand analogy.
When you’re about to purchase a hosting plan for your website, you might wonder: Which plan should I choose, and how do I make sense of this?
The hosting space is measured in GB, Gigabytes (as of the date I’m writing this post)—10 GB, 100 GB, 300 GB, and so on.
Now, to help you understand and know how to pick a plan that suits you, imagine you’ve arrived at an office building and are about to purchase a space for your business. You like the space on the 25th floor, and in the project’s sales office, the salesperson tells you they sell the space by square meters (m²).
The question you need to ask yourself is: How many square feet of office space does my business need? 3,000? 4,000? 40,000? 300,000?
With that in mind, let’s assume you have five employees in the company. Based on your space and budget needs, you decide to buy 50 square meters of office space because it suits your requirements for space, furniture, and the company’s growth projection. It’s the perfect fit for your business.
Hosting works in a similar way, and to figure out which plan to choose, you can use this formula:
Multiply each GB of hosting space by 5 and convert the result into square feet.
For example:
10 GB × 5 = 50 → Now convert it into square feet. Your required space is X SqFt.
You can also use the formula in reverse. Estimate how much physical space your business would need (in square meters), then divide it by 5.
For example, a medium-sized company with 30 employees might need 5,000 SqFt. If we divide that by 5, the resulting number is 100. Convert the unit from SqFt to GB, and we see that you’d need 100 GB of web hosting, disk space, or hosting space to ensure your website functions smoothly.
Remember, a website is essentially the virtualization of a traditional office space, and it follows “the same physical laws” as a physical location (business).
What I’ve just explained is something I want you to keep in mind in case you own a small or medium-sized business and are shopping for a website. If you’re presented with complicated terms and technical jargon like “funnels,” “leads,” “Google Ads,” “SEM,” “SEO,” “Facebook (META) Pixel,” “Web Hosting,” “Virtualization,” “Cloud Computing,” etc., this analogy should help simplify things.
A web hosting company that has been our star ally over the last 13 years is HostDime. (Yes, they’re so good that our relationship has lasted that long, and we hope it lasts for many more years!) You can check out their plans and services on their website: www.hostdime.com.co.
